You don't know what you don't know

There are so many times, where I am asked about health, fitness, nutrition information. Pretty much daily and I am always stunned at some people's idea of what healthy is.
It's not being super skinny, it's not eating a salad at every meal, it's not having to do 45 min on a treadmill every day.
We have been taught the basic food groups since elementary school, and what drives me batty, is that the school cafeteria puts a slice of pizza on a plate, which suggests that this is a healthy meal.
Cheese- dairy, crust-bread, pizza sauce- vegetable,pepperoni- meat? So, it contains the 4 food groups?
Is this what we are teaching our kids?

There is a nationwide problem with obesity, and the average state has over 30% obesity rate. that's one in 3 people. The childhood obesity rate is an ever growing problem as well. Our kids may be active, but they are also sedentary, sitting on their butts playing video games, focused on their electronic devices. I see more kids with Iphones and headphone on than I do outside playing, riding bikes, playing tag or just running around.
Even the kids that are not obese or overweight, are still effecting their bodies by the food and drink they consume.
Lets just take gatorade, 20 oz contains 130 calories, and 34 gms of sugar!!!! That is 9 teaspoons of sugar....put that in a cup and look at it.
There are studies out there that link sugar to heart disease, yes, it can and it will happen!!

So, what are your options??
Get educated. Know what you should be eating every day. Do your homework and mostly, be prepared.

We live very busy lives, and as parents, we are so busy taking kids here and there, sports, extra curricular activities, we don't often sit around a table and eat together. Can you say Drive thru??? On a given day, the average Mcdonalds serves over 500,000 cars in the US alone. This is just ONE of the many fast food places.
Don't get me wrong, there are times when we all do this, whether it be a treat, or just to grab a drink....but better to get out of your car, run into 7-11 and grab water!!!

My message today is because we need this change. Our lives depend on it. I don't want to be the one that gets that call, about a friend or a child, who is now struggling with diabetes, asthma, blood pressure problems, for a problem that is reversible, controllable.

As a fitness instructor, exercise is not enough. We need to make other changes too. Cut out the wine every day, commit to education of what's good food and what we need more of, and what we need less of.

I have spent countless hours researching, studying, all the different diets, and what I found was they all have a common thread, but we should not go on a diet. It should be a change in our thinking, and lifestyle changes.
Preparation, being ready, and planning your week, month or whatever, is the key.

In good health, Barb
